Viral meningitis cases rise in Ganderbal; schools alerted in Kangan belt

Ganderbal: Health Department Ganderbal has reported a rise in cases of Viral Meningitis in several areas of the district, prompting intensified surveillance and alerts to educational institutions in the Kangan belt.

According to an official communication issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Ganderbal, cases have been reported from Beila, Wussan, Haripora, Angipora and adjoining villages in Block Kangan.

The communication stated that on May 12, four patients were admitted to District Hospital Ganderbal, while four others from different areas of the district were shifted to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.

Health authorities cautioned that the number of cases could increase further.

The department said a Rapid Response Team along with local health staff visited the affected areas and conducted Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities aimed at prevention and containment of the disease.

Schools attended by affected children were also visited and advised to remain vigilant and report any new symptomatic cases immediately.

Institutions mentioned in the communication include Islamic Revival School Kangan, Government Primary School Shah Mohalla Wussan, Evergreen School Nunner, Hanfia School Watlar, Tiny Hearts School Ganderbal and Haji Baba School Al Kangan.

The CMO has urged the Chief Education Officer Ganderbal to direct all government and private educational institutions to closely monitor the situation and immediately inform health authorities about suspected cases.
