Srinagar: A probationary sub-inspector of Jammu and Kashmir Police allegedly shot his wife dead following a domestic dispute and later attempted suicide in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said on Saturday.
The accused officer has been identified as Deep Singh, who was posted at a Special Operations Group (SOG) camp in the Kandi area of Kupwara.
Officials said the incident took place late Friday night after an argument broke out between Singh and his wife, Bhawana, at their residence.
“In a fit of rage, the officer allegedly opened fire on his wife, resulting in her death on the spot,” an official said.
After the shooting, Singh allegedly turned the weapon on himself and sustained critical injuries.
He was shifted to a hospital and later referred to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences for specialised treatment.
Hospital sources described his condition as life-threatening.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and started an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
The body of the deceased woman has been sent for post-mortem examination, officials said.
