GANDERBAL: The J&K Sports Council (JKSC) on Wednesday launched the Kashmir Champions Football League (KCFL) trials at Ganderbal, marking the beginning of a district-wide football talent identification drive across the Kashmir Valley.

Youth from across the district participated in large numbers, registering and competing with enthusiasm, reflecting the growing demand for structured sporting platforms at the grassroots level.

Officials said the KCFL trial roadmap spans every district of Kashmir — from Kupwara to Kulgam and Baramulla to Shopian — to ensure that no deserving athlete is denied an opportunity.

The initiative forms a key component of the Government of J&K’s 100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, which seeks to leverage sports, youth engagement and community participation as a proactive response to the growing drug menace across the Union Territory.

JKSC said its vision is rooted in the belief that talent exists in every district and only needs a proper platform and opportunity. The KCFL aims to provide a structured, government-backed pathway from grassroots trials to organised league competition.

The Sports Council said the initiative is intended not only to provide a field for competition but also to offer youth a meaningful and constructive direction.

Officials added that sustained participation in sports helps build discipline, confidence, teamwork and purpose, which act as strong safeguards against substance abuse and negative influences.

By creating year-round sporting ecosystems instead of isolated events, JKSC aims to strengthen both athletic culture and youth development across the Valley.

Subsequent KCFL trial drives will now be conducted across the remaining districts of Kashmir. Players identified through the trials will enter the full Kashmir Champions Football League competitive structure to ensure sustained engagement, long-term athlete development and continued mentorship throughout the sporting season.

The Sports Council reiterated its commitment to building a stronger, healthier and more empowered generation through sports.

Meanwhile, adding further momentum to the region’s growing sports movement, the South Kashmir Volleyball League will commence on Wednesday in Shopian.

The league will feature six teams from different districts of Kashmir competing for volleyball supremacy and providing a vibrant platform for young athletes to showcase their talent through organised competition.
