Kulgam: Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Shahzad Alam on Tuesday visited the accident-prone Manigam Crossing on National Highway 44 to assess the prevailing situation and review measures required to improve road safety along the stretch.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner took stock of the existing infrastructure and safety arrangements at the crossing.
Interacting with local residents, the DC listened to concerns regarding frequent road accidents occurring at the location. Residents demanded construction of a separate service road from Manigam Crossing to Nipora Crossing to streamline traffic movement and improve commuter safety.
Acknowledging the seriousness of the issue, the Deputy Commissioner directed the concerned engineering wings to conduct a detailed feasibility study and submit a comprehensive proposal for development of the proposed service road.
He also stressed the need for immediate interim safety measures, including installation of proper signboards, road markings, speed regulation mechanisms and improved visibility arrangements to prevent accidents.
The Deputy Commissioner assured the public that all necessary steps would be taken on priority to minimise accident risks and ensure safer movement for commuters on the highway stretch.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, Superintending Engineer R&B, Executive Engineer R&B, representatives from National Highways Authority of India and other concerned officials accompanied the Deputy Commissioner during the visit.
