Baramulla: An Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) lost his life after accidentally slipping during a night patrol operation in the upper forest belt of Hamam Markoot area of Rafiabad in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said.
The deceased officer was identified as Naib Subedar Hira Bahadur Pandey of 32 Rashtriya Rifles, affiliated with P/Unit 3/9 GR.
According to officials, the incident took place during a night patrol and area domination exercise in the dense forests of Hamam Markoot when the officer reportedly lost balance while moving through the difficult mountainous terrain. He sustained grievous injuries after falling into a deep gorge and succumbed on the spot.
Army personnel immediately launched rescue efforts and later shifted the body from the forest area, while necessary procedures were initiated by the Army and local police. Officials termed the incident accidental and said a case has been registered
The upper reaches of Rafiabad are known for their treacherous terrain and thick forests, where security forces frequently conduct anti-militancy surveillance and night patrol operations.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps paid tributes to the slain officer in a post on X, stating: “Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of Braveheart Naib Subedar Hira Bahadur Pandey, while on operational duty in Baramulla district.
