According to officials, the incident took place during a night patrol and area domination exercise in the dense forests of Hamam Markoot when the officer reportedly lost balance while moving through the difficult mountainous terrain. He sustained grievous injuries after falling into a deep gorge and succumbed on the spot.

Army personnel immediately launched rescue efforts and later shifted the body from the forest area, while necessary procedures were initiated by the Army and local police. Officials termed the incident accidental and said a case has been registered

The upper reaches of Rafiabad are known for their treacherous terrain and thick forests, where security forces frequently conduct anti-militancy surveillance and night patrol operations.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps paid tributes to the slain officer in a post on X, stating: “Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of Braveheart Naib Subedar Hira Bahadur Pandey, while on operational duty in Baramulla district. His courage and dedication will forever inspire us. Chinar Warriors salute the valour and sacrifice of the Braveheart. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and are committed to their well-being.”
