Srinagar: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir V.K. Birdi and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri on Tuesday co-chaired a high-level meeting at the Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar to review the progress and implementation of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan.

The 100-day anti-drug campaign, launched under the directions of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, aims to intensify efforts against drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the Union Territory through a coordinated, zero-tolerance approach.

The meeting was attended by all Range Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) of Kashmir, Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), Joint Director Prosecution (JDP) ZPHQ, and other senior officials.

At the outset, district SSPs briefed the chair on ongoing enforcement measures against drug networks. Officials informed that sustained action under the NDPS Act has led to the arrest of over 296 drug peddlers and the registration of more than 281 cases across the Kashmir zone. Authorities have also identified key hotspots linked to drug activity.

In addition to enforcement, police and civil administration have stepped up awareness efforts. Around 460 awareness programmes have been conducted, particularly targeting students and vulnerable sections, to highlight the dangers of substance abuse.

Officials further reported that illegal cultivation of contraband on nearly 15 kanals of land has been destroyed. Several chemist shops found violating drug regulations have been sealed, while properties linked to drug trafficking have been identified and attached under relevant legal provisions.

Deputy Commissioners presented district-wise progress, highlighting intensified outreach in educational institutions, panchayats, and high-risk areas. They also pointed to improved coordination with line departments as a key factor in the campaign’s implementation.

Speaking at the meeting, IGP Kashmir V.K. Birdi stressed the need for sustained and coordinated action to dismantle drug networks. He called for strengthening intelligence-based operations, ensuring strict enforcement, and improving prosecution to secure higher conviction rates.

Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri underscored the importance of a multi-sectoral approach involving civil administration, health services, educational institutions, and civil society. He emphasized the need to strengthen rehabilitation mechanisms alongside enforcement and prevention efforts.

Both officials directed all stakeholders to further intensify operations, enhance coordination, and adopt innovative strategies to make the anti-drug campaign more effective.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to eliminate drug abuse from Jammu & Kashmir through sustained enforcement, preventive measures, and community participation.
