Srinagar: Police have arrested four drug peddlers in Kupwara, Awantipora, Handwara & Anantnag and a fifth pone in Shopian district and recovered contraband substance from their possession.
In Kupwara, police arrested Aijaz Ahmad Bhat of Shumnag, at Shaloora Crossing after a contraband substance “suspected to be charas” (cannabis) was recovered from his possession, a p[olice spokesperson said.
He said in Awantipora, one Gulzar Ahmad Mir of Lariyar Tral was arrested after 30 grams of cannabis sticks, and 190 grams of ‘charas’ powder (190 grams), and 1.5 kg of grinded cannabis were recovered from his possession.
In Handwara, police apprehend Afroz Ahmad Shah of Check Langate. Heroin-like contraband substance was recovered from his possession, spokesperson said.
In Anantnag, one Mohammad Abass Reshi of Kehribal was arrested and approximately 250 grams of cannabis powder was recovered from his possession.
During checking at T- Chowk Reshipora in Shopian, police arrested Mohammad Imran Parray of Kashwa Zainapora after 2.100 Kgs of crushed cannabis-like substance was recovered from his possession.
Cases under relevant section of law have been registered at respective police stations and investigations have been initiated, police said.
In a separate statement, police said it has detained eight “habitual drug peddlers” under relevant provisions of law, following due approval from the Executive Magistrates.
The detained individuals were identified as repeat offenders actively involved in narcotics-related activities. Despite previous legal action, they persisted in the drug trade, posing a significant threat to public health, especially to the youth of the district.
Acting decisively, the police invoked preventive detention laws to curb their activities and prevent further harm. Subsequently, all eight accused have been lodged in Subsidiary Jail Kehribal, Anantnag.
This action underscores the firm resolve of J&K Police to dismantle drug networks and curb the menace of substance abuse. The police remain committed to taking stringent measures against habitual offenders and seek continued cooperation from the public in eradicating this social evil.
