Srinagar: The Meteorological department on Sunday issued a heatwave alert for five districts of the Jammu region. The weather is expected to remain pleasant in the rest of the union territory over the next five days.

“Hot and dry weather is likely to continue in Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Reasi and Udhampur districts during the next two days with heat wave conditions at a few places on 26-27 April,” an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

The official noted that people should avoid heat exposure during peak hours and advised them to stay hydrated.

In Kashmir, the weather is expected to remain pleasant and dry with the possibility of light rain at some places over the next 48 hours.

“One or two spells of light rain or thunder may occur at many places with gusty winds or hailstorm at a few places towards evening on April 27 and 28.

The weather will be generally dry on April 29 and 30,” he added.

The maximum temperature in Kashmir has been hovering around 17-22 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature recorded last night was around nine degrees Celsius.

In the wake of persistent heatwave in Jammu plains, temperatures stayed well above normal.

Jammu recorded a high of 39.4 degrees Celsius (3.7 degrees Celsius above normal) and a low of 23.3 degrees Celsius (0.9 degrees Celsius above average), a Meteorological Department spokesperson said.

Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district, was the second-hottest recorded place with a maximum of 35.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 19.6 degrees Celsius, he said.

Among other stations, Batote in Ramban district recorded a day temperature of 27.7 degrees Celsius and a night temperature of 14.0 degrees Celsius. Bhaderwah town in Doda district recorded a maximum of 27.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 8.0 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall activity remained largely negligible across the region. However, Banihal town along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway recorded 3.0 mm and Batote 2.4 mm of light precipitation.
