Srinagar: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo and Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Chakravarthy on Monday reviewed anti-drug measures in the district, calling for a sharper and more coordinated crackdown on drug peddlers and their networks.

The review was held during a meeting of the District Level Committee on the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) at the DC Office Complex, focusing on the effectiveness of enforcement and preventive strategies under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan.

Officials stressed the need for intensified enforcement, stronger inter-agency coordination among police, regulatory and health departments, and sustained action to dismantle drug supply chains. The committee also called for enhanced confiscations under the NDPS Act to weaken narcotics networks operating in the district.

A strong emphasis was laid on expanding Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities, particularly in schools, colleges and coaching centres, to sensitise youth about the dangers of substance abuse. Promoting sports and recreational activities in identified hotspots was also highlighted as a key preventive strategy.

Reviewing progress, officials informed the meeting that 26 FIRs have been registered and 39 persons arrested so far under the campaign. Nine drug hotspots have been identified across Srinagar, with regular naka checking and surveillance in place. A total of 157 CCTV cameras have been installed in these areas to strengthen monitoring.

As part of enforcement measures, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Kashmir has disqualified 73 driving licences and seized 65 vehicles linked to NDPS cases. The Drug Control Department has conducted extensive inspections of chemist shops, leading to the suspension of six drug licences for violations.

The Deputy Commissioner directed all departments, including the RTO, Drug Control authorities and Police, to maintain strict and sustained action against those involved in drug trafficking or facilitating such activities. He underscored the need for a comprehensive approach combining enforcement, awareness and rehabilitation.

SSP Srinagar reiterated a zero-tolerance policy, stating that action against identified hotspots will be further intensified and drug peddlers will face strict legal consequences.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the district administration, police, transport, excise, drug control and anti-narcotics agencies, who briefed the committee on ongoing enforcement actions and future strategy.
