Srinagar: In a major connectivity boost for Kashmir, the Indian Railways has announced the launch of a direct Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat train, with the inaugural run scheduled for April 30. The service, introduced by Northern Railway, is expected to provide significant relief to Valley commuters travelling to other parts of the country.
Railway officials said all arrangements have been finalised for the inaugural journey, while the regular timetable and additional halts will be notified separately. The train will operate with a 20-coach Vande Bharat rake and cover a distance of approximately 266.66 kilometres during its inaugural run. It will also halt at Bijbehara, which will remain operational for cross-run movement of the service.
Designed specifically for the challenging terrain and sub-zero conditions of Jammu and Kashmir, the train is equipped with advanced winterisation features to ensure uninterrupted operations in extreme weather.
For the first time, self-regulating heating cables have been installed to prevent freezing of water pipelines, while 1800W silicon heating pads have been fitted in water tanks. Additional heating systems have been integrated into bio-toilets and auxiliary tanks to maintain sanitation functions during severe cold conditions.
Officials said warm air ducts connected to the air-conditioning system will supply heat to restrooms, while heaters and thermal insulation have been incorporated to ensure the proper functioning of vacuum-based toilet systems. The train is also equipped with a water-draining mechanism to prevent freezing when stabled.
To enhance operational safety, an embedded heating element has been installed in the driver’s windshield to prevent fogging and ensure visibility during snowfall and fog. Heating systems have also been fitted in the air dryer mechanism to maintain efficient braking, while critical components near water tanks have been shielded with stainless steel covers to prevent damage.
The Vande Bharat train will operate at speeds of up to 160 kmph and offer modern passenger amenities including fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic doors, LED lighting, CCTV surveillance and an energy-efficient regenerative braking system.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal said the operation of the specialised Vande Bharat in Jammu and Kashmir fulfils a long-pending demand of passengers and local residents.
“Our objective is not merely to provide faster travel, but also to ensure all-weather connectivity—even amidst the biting cold of the Valley. This train will serve as a strong and reliable bridge connecting devotees travelling to Vaishno Devi with the Kashmir Valley, while simultaneously boosting tourism in the region,” he said.
