Education is one of the most important pillars for the development of any society. A strong and efficient education system helps create knowledge, awareness and responsible citizens who contribute to nation-building. To enhance the quality of school education and make it consistent with the vision of modern learning, the Government of India introduced the PM SHRI Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) in September 2022. The scheme is directly connected to the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which is supposed to introduce major changes in the education sector nationwide.

The PM SHRI Scheme aims to transform selected government schools into model institutions that offer high-quality and holistic education. The government intends to establish over 14,500 PM SHRI schools in India under this initiative. These schools will be modelled to be centres of excellence that will serve as models for other schools by adopting modern teaching methods, better infrastructure and new learning practices.

The PM SHRI Scheme has become a significant project in enhancing the education system in Jammu and Kashmir. This programme has seen the Union Territory experience tremendous development in school infrastructure and learning facilities. In Jammu and Kashmir, approximately 396 government schools have been identified to be upgraded into PM SHRI schools. To improve the quality of education, these schools are being equipped with better classrooms, modern laboratories, digital learning facilities, and better educational resources.

Modern infrastructure and technology-based learning are among the key features of PM SHRI schools. Most of these schools have smart classrooms, digital libraries, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratories. Technology has enabled the teaching-learning process to be more interactive and effective. Digital tools allow teachers to explain complex concepts, and students have access to a wider variety of educational resources. This change is especially helpful to students in rural and remote Jammu and Kashmir, where education facilities were once limited.

The other significant feature of PM SHRI schools is their emphasis on environmental sustainability and awareness. Some of the schools being built under the scheme are being equipped with environmentally friendly features such as solar panels, LED lighting systems, rainwater harvesting structures, and proper waste management systems. Other schools have also come up with nutrition gardens, where students are taught about natural farming methods and healthy eating habits. These initiatives enhance the learning environment and also make students feel responsible towards environmental conservation.

The scheme is also meant to eliminate the traditional system of rote learning and encourage holistic development among students. Critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills are more emphasized in PM SHRI schools. Students are also motivated to engage in activities, projects and practical learning experiences that will improve their knowledge on various subjects. Younger students are especially encouraged to use play-based and activity-based learning methods, which makes the educational process more engaging and enjoyable.

Besides academic education, PM SHRI schools are also concerned with skill development and vocational education. Practical skills and various career options are introduced to students to help them realize the relationship between education and real-life opportunities. Vocational training and practical activities expose students to confidence and prepare them to work in the future.

The success of the PM SHRI Scheme in Jammu and Kashmir is already evident in the success of students who attend these schools. An example is Misbah Jan, a student of PM SHRI Middle School, Bandipora district, who passed the National Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Examination. Her success made her school known and a better academic atmosphere was established under the scheme.

In the same manner, students of PM SHRI Middle School in Pulwama district, such as Furkan Mushtaq, Sameena Fayaz, Nadeem Maqbool, Irfan Reshi, Adnan Bilal, Mohsin Sajad, Tawqeer Gulzar, and Aysha, were chosen to participate in a national-level science drama competition. Their involvement at the national level is an indication of the increased confidence, creativity and scientific awareness among the students studying in PM SHRI schools.

Another interesting case comes from the PM SHRI Government High School in Doda District, which has implemented vocational training programs such as data entry, tailoring, and community journalism. Over one hundred students and girls from the area have been trained in these programs and have been able to acquire skills and look for new avenues of employment. This, therefore, shows that the program is improving academic education and is also being empowered with skills that are being developed.

The PM SHRI Scheme is also significant in enhancing educational equality in rural and tribal regions of Jammu and Kashmir. In remote areas, many students used to struggle with the lack of resources and poor infrastructure. The scheme provides students in these regions with the same quality of education as those in urban centres through the introduction of modern facilities, improved teaching methods, and digital learning tools.

Moreover, every PM SHRI school will be a mentor school to other local government schools. These schools will contribute to the overall quality of education in the region by sharing innovative teaching practices and educational resources. This partnership will make sure that the advantages of the scheme are extended to a broader network of schools and students.

To conclude, it can be stated that the PM SHRI Scheme is an important step towards improving the education system in Jammu and Kashmir. The initiative has opened new opportunities for students in Jammu and Kashmir through improvements in government schools, digital learning, environmental awareness, and skill development.

The success of students like Misbah Jan and others underscores the positive developments occurring in PM SHRI schools. With the scheme still growing, it is likely to further enhance the education base in Jammu and Kashmir and equip young learners to be confident, competent, and responsible citizens of the country.
