Srinagar: A drug racket was busted in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district with the arrest of six peddlers and recovery of over 13 kg of cannabis, police said on Thursday.
The Anantnag police achieved major success in multiple operations carried out across the district, in south Kashmir, leading to the registration of five cases, arrest of six drug peddlers, and recovery of a significant quantity of contraband substances, a police spokesperson said.
Acting on specific information, a police party conducted a raid at the residence of Nisar Ahmad Nadaf, resident of Dachigam Srigufwara, and recovered approximately two kgs of cannabis-like substance, he said.
In another instance, the spokesperson said that during naka checking at Shakras, police arrested Adil Ahmad Mochi, a resident of Badroo, and recovered approximately two kgs of cannabis-like substance from his possession.
At Pethnoo Crossing, Srigufwara, police apprehended Aqib Ramzan Rather, resident of Chatrasoo, and recovered approximately two kgs of similar narcotic substance.
In another operation, a police party intercepted a passenger auto at Iqbal Market near Mill Morh, the spokesperson said.
The driver and a passenger identified as Javeed Ahmad Dandroo, resident of Pandithpora Anchidoora, and Majid Akram Malik, resident of New Qazibagh Anantnag, were arrested after approximately 12 grams of heroin was recovered from their possession, he said.
In a separate action, a police party apprehended one Sabzar Ahmad Rather, resident of Waghama Rather Mohalla, at K.V Pora Marhama and recovered approximately 7.854 kg of cannabis-like substance from a bag in his possession, the spokesperson added.
In Awantipora, police arrested two drug peddlers — Junaid Tariq of Hariparigam, and Mubashir Ahmad Wani of Panjpora, and recovered 1.2 Kg of cannabis (charas/chura)-like substance from them.
Rameez Ahmad Malik and Ubaid-ur-Rehman Malik, of Trehgam Malik Mohalla, Kupwara, were arrested at Nambal Crossing near NH-44, and 12 grams of heroin-like substance was recovered from their possession.
In Pulwama, one Abdul Qayoom Bhat of Zadoora was arrested and 520 grams of poppy straw-like substance and 30 grams of cannabis powder-like substance were recovered.
At Tujan Telsar crossing, police arrested Umer Ayub Rather of Frasipora, after his personal search yielded three grams of heroin-like substance
In Ganderbal, Javed Ahmad Dar of Khanan Kangan, was arrestd following a raid at his cowshed adjacent to his residence, during which 580 grams of cannabis-like powder was recovered, police said, adding that they have registered cases against these peddlers and they remain in custody.
Further investigations are underway, police said.
