17 drug peddlers arrested

Srinagar: Police on Wednesday said they have arrested 17 drug peddlers in multiple operations in Anantnag, Shopian, Budgam and Kulgam and recovered “significant quantity” of contraband substances from their possession.

In Anantnag, police recovered 6.614 kgs of cannabis during a raid at the residence of Naseer Ahmad of Shirhama. Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused person, a police spokesperson said.

One Abdul Hameed Sheikh of Sheikh Mohalla Vailoo Devalgam, was arrested at Bidhad Bridge, and 32 grams of cannabis were recovered from his possession.

At Wullarhama on the Bijbehara–Pahalgam one Danish Ahmad Kumar of Kralpora Kullar was arrested when his frisking yielded 100 grams of cannabis-like substance.

At Panjpora, one Taseen Ramzan Bhat of Batpora Marhama was arrested when 32 grams of cannabis was recovered from his possession. Feroz Ahmad Mundu of Nattipora Sangam, was arrested at Halmulla and 270 grams of cannabis powder recovered from his possession.

In Shopian, 120 grams of cannabis-like substance was recovered from Zakir Hussain Awan of Pehlipora Dunadoo Keller. He too was arrested.

At Kandhama in Budgam, police arrested Mudasir Ahmed Bhat and Feroz Ahmed Bhat, both residents of village Bamruda, after 1.120 kg of semi-grinded cannabis-like substance was recovered from them.

In Kulgam, 10 drug peddlers were arrested in separate operations across the district. Fayaz Ahmad Dar of Bat Tachloo, yielded 5.16 grams of heroin-like substance, while 1.40 grams of heroin-like substance was recovered from another accused Asif Abbas Dar of Batengoo.

At Levdoora, police arrested Saqib Manzoor Itoo of Wanpoh was apprehended along with 5.05 grams of heroin-like substance.

At General Road Arrigatnoo, one Adil Manzoor Ganie of Kulgam was apprehended after approx. 120 grams of cannabis-like substance and 2 grams of brown sugar-like substance were recovered from him.

At NHW near Zadoora, 119 grams of cannabis was recovered from Junaid Salam Nengroo while Jasir Imtiyaz of Karigam, Qazigund and Basit Ahmad Kaloo of Sopore, yielded 20 grams of cannabis-like substance. On disclosure, Amir Maqbool of Badderpora Qaimoh was arrested and 29.08 grams of cannabis-like substance was recovered.

Ghulam Mohi Din Khan of Kalian, Devsar was arrested when 1.3 kg of Gnaja like substance was recovered from his possession. At Sadiwara Dooru Road, Arif Hussain Wani of Nadoora, was arrested after 1.7 kgs of poppy straw was recovered from his possession.

Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations against all these accused, and further investigation is underway to unearth the broader network involved, police said.
