JAMMU: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday inaugurated the second edition of the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Tournament by unveiling the tournament trophy and team jerseys at Maulana Azad Stadium.
The day-and-night tournament is being organised as part of a social awareness campaign against drug abuse and to promote healthy lifestyles among youth.
Among those present on the occasion were Javid Ahmed Dar, Nasir Aslam Wani, tournament organiser Tejinder Singh, besides participating teams, organisers and senior officials.
During the ceremony, Omar Abdullah formally launched the trophy for the tournament and released the official jerseys of the participating teams.
Interacting with the players, the Chief Minister extended his best wishes and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity.
“Sports provide a positive direction to young people and help keep them away from social evils such as drug abuse,” he said while speaking to the players.
The organisers said the second edition of the tournament has been conceived not merely as a sporting event but as a broader social initiative to spread awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and to motivate young people to engage in constructive activities.
Community leaders and participants present on the occasion highlighted the role of cricket in promoting unity, discipline and teamwork. They said such events inspire youth to adopt healthier lifestyles and contribute positively to society.
