LEH: Justice Surya Kant on Saturday inaugurated the newly constructed District Court Complex at Melong Thang in Leh, marking a major step towards strengthening judicial infrastructure in Ladakh.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vinai Kumar Saxena and Justice Arun Palli. Also present were Justice Sindhu Sharma and other judges of the High Court.
On his arrival, Justice Surya Kant was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour and was welcomed through a traditional cultural performance showcasing Ladakh’s heritage. The Chief Justice later unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the inauguration of the court complex.
A 3D presentation highlighting the architectural design, facilities and layout of the new complex—including courtrooms, administrative offices and residential quarters—was also presented. The dignitaries later inspected various facilities, including the court of the Principal District and Sessions Judge.
The newly constructed complex is aimed at improving judicial infrastructure and access to justice in the region. Built at an estimated cost of ₹54.85 crore, the facility is equipped with modern courtrooms and administrative infrastructure to enhance the justice delivery system.
On the occasion, the Chief Justice of India also inaugurated the newly constructed building of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority at Melong Thang. The building has been completed at an estimated cost of ₹5.70 crore.
Following the inauguration, the dignitaries participated in a plantation drive within the premises of the new LLSA building.
Interacting with local media, Justice Surya Kant expressed satisfaction over the completion of the judicial infrastructure and said the new facilities would serve the people of Leh district for generations by ensuring better access to legal services. He also announced that the District Court Complex at Kargil would be inaugurated during his ongoing visit to Ladakh.
Among others present on the occasion were the Chief Secretary of Ladakh, Director General of Police, Ladakh, General Officer Commanding, 14 Corps, Registrar General and several senior civil and judicial officers.
Later, the Chief Justice also inspected the newly constructed High Court Guest House at Melong Thang.
The inauguration of the District Court Complex is being seen as a significant milestone in Ladakh’s judicial development, aimed at improving accessibility, efficiency and the rule of law in the Union Territory.
