Baramulla: World Down Syndrome Day was observed with enthusiasm and a strong message of inclusion at the special school ‘Dagger Pariwar’ in Baramulla, where students, teachers, and community members came together to promote awareness, empathy, and social connection.

Highlighting this year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” the programme focused on addressing the issue of social isolation, which disproportionately affects individuals with Down Syndrome. Speakers emphasized the need for building meaningful relationships and ensuring that individuals with the condition are fully integrated into society.

Students actively participated in cultural and awareness activities, creating an atmosphere of joy, acceptance, and mutual respect. Teachers and organizers underlined the importance of inclusive education and nurturing supportive environments both within schools and in the broader community.

Renowned writer and Vice President of the Down Syndrome Association, Aanzar Mohju, said that “Children with special needs deserve equal opportunities, acceptance, and dignified support with sympathy.” His remarks resonated with the gathering and reinforced the need for a compassionate and inclusive approach.

During the event, speakers noted that loneliness remains one of the most overlooked challenges faced by individuals with Down syndrome. They called upon families, educators, and society at large to move beyond token gestures and work towards genuine inclusion by fostering participation and building lasting connections.

Saniya Rashid, Principal of Dagger Pariwar School, said, “At our school, we are proud to nurture 32 children with Down syndrome along with other special children, each of whom brings unique abilities and potential. Our mission is not just education, but empowerment—ensuring they feel valued, included, and confident. Through collective support from families and society, we can help them overcome loneliness and lead dignified, fulfilling lives.”
