Hockey J&K UT Men’s Championship Begins in Jammu After Three-Year Hiatus

Jammu: The Hockey Jammu & Kashmir UT Men’s Championship commenced today at the KK Hakku Hockey Stadium in Jammu, marking the return of the tournament after a gap of three years. A total of 17 teams from across the Union Territory are participating in the championship.

The tournament was formally inaugurated on Tuesday by Secretary J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul.

Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary Hockey J&K, Dr. Taran Singh, said the association has been working actively to revive hockey in the region since taking charge on May 31, 2025. He highlighted that several sub-junior tournaments and district-level competitions have been organized in recent months, leading to improved performances by J&K teams at the national level. He also noted that teams are currently preparing for upcoming sub-junior national championships scheduled to be held in Rajgir and Ranchi.

Match Results

Three matches were played on the opening day.

In the first match, Ganderbal defeated Kupwara 6-2. Kupwara captain Sharandeep Singh scored two field goals in the 7th and 17th minutes, while Zia equalised for Ganderbal in the 13th minute. Ganderbal captain Raja then added another goal, followed by a brilliant hat-trick from Idrees, who scored in the 26th, 46th, and 50th minutes. Raja netted his second goal in the 56th minute to seal the win.

The second match saw a dominant performance by Jammu West, who thrashed Shopian 16-0. Jaswinder Singh and Tarlochan Singh scored three goals each, while Ramnik Singh, Shivam, and Prabhjot added two goals apiece. Gunpreet, captain Ramandeep Singh, Jaspreet, and Paramveer scored one goal each.

In the third match, Kathua registered an identical 16-0 victory over Budgam. Varinder Singh led the charge with six goals, while Manav and Paragya scored two each. Nishat, Amit, Vansh, Gurkirat, Harshdeep, and Gopal contributed one goal each.

Matches were officiated by umpires including Faizan Khan, Sushil, Lal Khan, Sunil Gupta, and Sahil Kumar, among others. Jaspreet Singh, Chanveer Singh, and Gargi served as scoring and technical officials across matches. J.P. Singh is the tournament director.

Among those present were Ajay Gupta (Manager, KK Hakku Stadium), Anil Sharma (Manager, Green Field), Arshi Nad (Incharge Indoor Stadium), Ishan Sharma (former Treasurer, Hockey J&K), Raviraj Singh (Treasurer), Manjit Singh (Vice President), Vinod Singh, Ranvir Singh, Harjit Singh (Kashmir Hockey), Tejinder Singh (Secretary), Jaswinder Kour (Vice President), P.P. Singh, Janak Singh (veteran hockey player), Jagjit Singh (coach), and parents of participating players.

Tomorrow’s Fixtures

  • J&K Police vs Pulwama — 10:30 AM
  • Baramulla vs Kulgam — 12:00 Noon
  • Ganderbal vs Poonch — 2:30 PM

The championship is expected to continue over the coming days, showcasing emerging talent and strengthening the hockey ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.
