Jammu (R.S. Pura): Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Working President Raman Bhalla on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led government, accusing it of failing to address key issues including restoration of statehood, rising unemployment, weakening public services, and economic challenges impacting the region.

Addressing a massive gathering at Shiv Nagar in the R.S. Pura constituency, Bhalla emphasized the significance of the forthcoming Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections, urging party workers to strengthen grassroots outreach. He said these elections are crucial for empowering people and revitalizing democratic institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.

“A strong Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body system is essential for participatory governance. Congress workers must ensure that the voices of the people are heard,” he said.

The programme was organised by former Minister Ch. Garu Ram, who recently rejoined the Congress party. The event witnessed participation from a large number of residents, party workers, farmers, youth, and traders. Several local leaders, including block presidents and senior workers, were also present.

Bhalla strongly advocated for granting ST-2 status to displaced persons from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK DPs), stating that these communities have faced decades of neglect and deserve justice, dignity, and constitutional safeguards. He reiterated the party’s commitment to addressing their long-pending demands.

Raising concerns over international trade dynamics, Bhalla claimed that policies at the Centre have adversely affected Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, particularly sectors such as agriculture, handicrafts, and small-scale industries. He alleged that farmers, artisans, and traders are facing increasing hardships due to lack of adequate safeguards.

Highlighting the shortage of LPG cylinders, Bhalla said erratic supply and rising prices have put an additional burden on households, especially those from economically weaker sections. He also criticised the Centre’s foreign policy, terming it “ineffective,” and alleged that it has failed to ensure stability in border regions like Jammu and Kashmir.

Taking strong exception to the delay in restoration of statehood, Bhalla termed it a betrayal of democratic rights and reiterated the demand for its immediate restoration to ensure accountable governance.

Expressing concern over unemployment, he said the youth in the region are facing a bleak future due to lack of job opportunities and ineffective policies, and called for a comprehensive employment roadmap.

He also flagged the growing drug menace, describing it as a “social emergency” that is adversely affecting the younger generation, and demanded strict action against drug trafficking along with effective rehabilitation measures.

Highlighting farmers’ issues, Bhalla pointed to rising input costs, inadequate minimum support price (MSP), and poor irrigation facilities, which he said are pushing the farming community into distress. He also underlined the challenges faced by traders and small businesses, including declining sales and increased financial pressures.

Criticising the healthcare and education sectors, Bhalla said both are grappling with staff shortages, affecting service delivery and causing hardship to patients and students alike. He further pointed to issues such as inadequate drinking water supply and unscheduled power cuts, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

Reaffirming the Congress party’s commitment to public welfare, Bhalla urged people to unite against what he termed as anti-people policies and support the party for transparent, accountable, and people-centric governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
