World Consumer Rights Day is observed every year on 15 March across the world. The day serves as an important reminder that every consumer deserves safety, fairness, and respect in the marketplace. In modern life, people depend heavily on goods and services available in markets. From the food we eat to the medicines we take and the household products we use every day, almost everything comes through markets and businesses. Because of this dependence, awareness about consumer rights has become increasingly important.

A consumer is any person who consumes goods or services for personal consumption. For example, when you are buying food items, clothes, medicine, books, or even using services such as transportation, healthcare, education, or online services, you are a consumer. The primary purpose of a market is to meet the needs of people. Hence, a consumer is the backbone of a market. If their rights are protected, then there will be a high level of trust between buyers and sellers.

Over the years, several efforts have been made around the world to protect consumers from unfair trade practices. Governments and organizations have introduced laws and policies to make sure that products sold in the market meet safety and quality standards. In India, consumer protection is facilitated by the Consumer Protection Act 2019. This helps in protecting consumers from misleading advertisements, defective products, and unfair business practices. It also establishes a system of consumer courts at the district, state, and national levels where consumers can seek justice for their grievances.

Consumer protection also includes several important rights. The most important among these rights is the Right to Safety. This right guarantees that consumers receive products that are safe for their health and life. The food item, medicine, electrical item, etc., must be of proper standards before being sold in the market. The second important right is the Right to Information. This right allows a consumer to know about the ingredients used in a product, its price, manufacturing date, expiry date, etc., before purchasing it. This will enable people to make a wise and responsible decision.

Another key consumer right is the Right to Choose, which allows individuals to select from different products and brands without pressure or manipulation. Healthy competition in the market benefits consumers by improving quality and maintaining fair prices. Consumers also have the Right to Be Heard, which means they can raise complaints or express concerns about products and services that fail to meet expectations. In addition, the Right to Seek Redressal allows consumers to demand compensation or replacement if they suffer loss due to defective or unsafe products.

These rights are formally established, yet it is the awareness of these rights that gives them real power. There are many consumers who are not aware of the rights to which they are entitled. World Consumer Rights Day plays an important role in informing consumers about their rights and encouraging responsible consumer behaviour.

In Kashmir, the importance of consumer awareness became very clear a few months ago when reports emerged about rotten meat being sold in some markets across the valley. The news shocked many residents and quickly became a matter of public concern. For many families, the discovery raised serious questions about the safety and quality of the food they had been purchasing from local shops.

The incident created worry among people. Many began to think about the type of food products being sold in the market and whether proper checks were being carried out. Some consumers also found that certain items available in shops had already passed their expiry dates. Situations like these create serious health risks for people and highlight the need for stronger awareness about consumer protection.

Selling rotten meat or expired products clearly violates the Right to Safety. Every consumer deserves clean, hygienic, and properly stored food. When such standards are ignored, public health can suffer. Incidents like these remind both consumers and sellers that safety and responsibility must always remain a priority in the marketplace.

Such events also highlight the importance of consumer awareness. When people understand their rights, they become more careful while buying products. They begin to check expiry dates, packaging, quality marks, and other important details before making a purchase. Awareness also encourages people to raise their voices when they come across unfair or unsafe practices.

World Consumer Rights Day encourages governments, educational institutions, and social organizations to take part in spreading this awareness. Public campaigns, workshops, seminars, and discussions can help educate people about their rights and responsibilities. Schools and colleges can also play an important role by teaching students about consumer protection and encouraging them to become responsible citizens.

In the fast-moving world that we live in today, markets are growing rapidly, especially with the rise of online shopping. While this may bring benefits, it also makes it even more important for consumers to remain alert and informed. An informed consumer is always better prepared to avoid fraud, ads, and unsafe products.

In conclusion, World Consumer Rights Day reminds us that consumer protection is not only the responsibility of governments and authorities but also of individuals themselves. When consumers remain informed and vigilant, they help create a fair and responsible market environment. Awareness, education, and responsible behaviour can ensure that markets serve people in the way they are meant to.

An informed consumer protects their health, their money, and their future. By spreading awareness and encouraging ethical practices, society can build a safer and more trustworthy marketplace for everyone.
