Verify Before You Enroll: Protecting Students from Uncertain Admissions

For thousands of students from Jammu and Kashmir, pursuing higher education outside the region represents an opportunity to build a secure and meaningful future. Families invest their savings, hopes, and aspirations in the belief that education will open doors to stability and professional growth. Yet, recent developments once again highlight a troubling reality: many students take admission in institutions without verifying whether their courses and colleges are properly approved by the relevant regulatory authorities.

A recent controversy involving Kashmiri students at Mewar University in Rajasthan has brought this issue into sharp focus. Students enrolled in a B.Sc. Nursing programme began raising concerns regarding the recognition of their course. Questions were raised about whether the programme had the necessary approvals from the Indian Nursing Council and the Rajasthan Nursing Council, the statutory bodies responsible for regulating nursing education.

For students who had already spent years studying and investing significant financial resources, the possibility that their degree might not be recognised created deep anxiety about their academic and professional future.

When Uncertainty Turns into Protest

As concerns intensified, students launched protests demanding clarity about the accreditation status of their programme. The situation escalated during demonstrations on campus, when several Kashmiri students were detained by police following the protests. Reports indicated that the agitation grew increasingly tense as students expressed fear that years of their academic effort might go in vain.

Earlier, dozens of students had also been suspended after raising questions about the recognition of their course. Such developments highlight the emotional and academic pressure students experience when the legitimacy of their degree becomes uncertain.

For students who are close to completing their programme, the stakes are extremely high. Without recognition from the relevant regulatory bodies, graduates may face serious obstacles in obtaining professional registration, employment opportunities, or admission to higher studies.

A Pattern That Has Appeared Before

Unfortunately, such situations are not entirely new. In the past, students from Jammu and Kashmir have faced similar challenges in different institutions across the country.

In some cases, students discovered that the number of admissions exceeded the approved seat intake. In others, students realised later that their courses lacked recognition from the appropriate regulatory councils. By the time such problems came to light, many students had already spent two or three years studying in the programme, leaving them caught between academic uncertainty and financial loss.

These incidents raise a fundamental question: why are students discovering these problems only after admission rather than before it?

The Role of Admission Consultancies

Another important dimension of this issue is the growing influence of private admission consultancies.

Across many regions, including parts of Jammu and Kashmir, consultancy agencies approach students promising easy admissions, scholarships, or guaranteed seats in universities across India. Students and parents, often unfamiliar with complex admission procedures, depend on these agents for guidance.

However, not all consultancies operate transparently. In some cases, students later discover that the institutions recommended by such agents lack proper regulatory approvals for the courses offered.

This creates a serious policy gap. While universities are regulated by national councils and statutory bodies, admission consultancies often operate without strict oversight. Governments should therefore consider introducing a mechanism to register and monitor educational consultancies so that misleading practices can be prevented.

What Every Student Must Verify

Before joining any institution, students must carefully verify whether the university and the course are recognised by the appropriate regulatory authorities.

For example:

  • Students pursuing MBBS must ensure that the medical college is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
  • Students enrolling in B.Sc. Nursing or other nursing programmes must confirm that the institution is approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC).
  • Students joining engineering or technical programmes must check approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
  • Universities themselves must be recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

These approvals are not merely administrative formalities. Professional registration, eligibility for government employment, and opportunities for higher education often depend on them.

If a course lacks the required recognition, students may face serious difficulties even after completing their degree.

A Simple Rule Before Admission

Students should remember one simple rule before paying admission fees:

  • Verify the approval first, pay the fee later.
  • Regulatory bodies maintain official lists of approved institutions and courses on their websites. Checking these lists takes only a few minutes but can save students from years of uncertainty.
  • Students should also verify whether the course itself has official approval, whether the intake seats are sanctioned by regulators, and whether previous batches of students have successfully completed the programme and obtained professional registration.

Shared Responsibility

While students must remain vigilant, responsibility cannot rest on them alone.

Universities must maintain transparency regarding the regulatory status of their courses. Governments must ensure stronger monitoring of educational institutions and admission consultancies.

Educational institutions should never admit students into programmes whose regulatory approvals are unclear or pending. A student’s academic future cannot be treated as an administrative experiment.

Conclusion

Education represents aspiration, sacrifice, and hope for countless families. When students discover problems with course recognition after admission, the consequences can be devastating both financially and emotionally.

The recent developments involving Kashmiri students at Mewar University serve as a reminder of the importance of transparency and verification in higher education. Students must verify institutions carefully. Governments must regulate admission consultancies. Universities must ensure accountability.

Only then can education truly remain a pathway to opportunity rather than uncertainty.
