Police bust fake currency racket in Shopian, 3 arrested; ₹79,000 recovered

Shopian: Police in Shopian have busted a fake currency circulation racket and arrested three persons while recovering counterfeit notes worth ₹79,000, officials said on Friday.

According to police, Police Station Shopian received a complaint from a local shopkeeper alleging that an individual had used fake currency notes while purchasing goods from his shop.

Following the complaint, police registered FIR No. 33/2026 under relevant sections of law and launched an investigation.

During the course of the investigation, police recovered counterfeit currency notes amounting to ₹79,000 from the accused and their associate. The arrested persons have been identified as Mohd Syed Wani, son of Gh Mohiuddin Wani, a resident of Batpora Shopian; Mohd Maqbool Naikoo, son of Habibullah Naikoo, a resident of Bungam Shopian; and Peerzada Altaf, son of Peerzada Gh Mohd, a resident of Tukroo Babnad in Zainapora.

All three accused have been formally arrested, police said.

Officials added that further investigation is underway to trace the source of the fake currency and identify other persons involved in the network.

Police have also urged the public to remain vigilant while dealing with currency transactions and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
