Kargil: Fresh snowfall in higher reaches and rainfall in lower areas of Kargil district since last night affected normal life in parts of the region, with continuous snowfall reported from Zanskar, Sankoo and Drass sectors.

The fresh spell of precipitation disrupted traffic movement on the Srinagar–Leh highway (NH-1D), while authorities monitored road conditions amid continuing snowfall in several high-altitude areas.

Officials said snowfall continued through the night in Zanskar valley and parts of Drass and Sankoo, leading to slippery road conditions and temporary disruption of vehicular movement on certain stretches of the highway.

Despite the inclement weather conditions, schools across Kargil district reopened on Thursday after the winter vacation, with students seen heading to their classrooms early in the morning.

Children carrying school bags were seen walking through snow-covered streets and wet roads in several areas as educational institutions resumed academic activities following the seasonal winter break.

Local residents said intermittent rainfall continued in Kargil town and adjoining lower areas, while higher altitude regions experienced moderate to heavy snowfall.

Authorities said road maintenance teams and traffic officials were monitoring the situation on NH-1D to ensure safe movement of vehicles and to clear snow accumulation where necessary.

Officials also advised commuters and transporters to exercise caution while travelling through snow-bound areas, particularly along vulnerable stretches of the highway connecting Kargil with other parts of Ladakh.

Locals said fresh snowfall in Zanskar and Drass is common during early spring months and often leads to temporary traffic disruptions, though road clearance operations usually restore movement within a short period.

Weather fluctuations during this period frequently bring alternating spells of snowfall and rain in Kargil district as winter gradually transitions into spring across Ladakh. [KNT]
