Chief Editor Nida-e-Mashriq passes away

Srinagar: Abdul Rashid Shah, veteran journalist, Chief Editor and owner of Urdu daily Nida-i-Mashriq passed away at Srinagar early on Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 78.

His Nimaz-e-Jinazah was offered at Jama Masjid Bagh-e-Mahtab Srinagar and his mortal remains were laid to rest in the afternoon at Mocho graveyard. His Jinazah was attended by prominent media persons, scholars, civil society leaders besides relatives and neighbours.

Born at Chinkral Mohallah, Habba Kadal in old Srinagar, Shah served in J&K Information Department for several years and quit his job in 1992 to launch his own newspaper Nida-e-Mashriq which soon created its own space among the serious readers of Kashmir.

As per family sources, Fateh Khwani will be held at 11 a.m at the graveyard on Monday (March 09, 2026).

Kashmir Images family extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, particularly to Haroon Rashid, and prays for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Meanwhile, Director Information and Public Relations, Nitish Rajora has expressed deep grief and sorrow on the demise of noted journalist Abdul Rashid Shah who passed away today.

In his condolence message, the Director described late Abdul Rashid as a respected figure in Kashmir’s journalistic circles who served journalism for decades. He extended his deepest condolences with the bereaved family and prayed peace for the departed soul and forbearance for the family to bear this loss.

Employees of the Joint Directorate of Information (JDI) Kashmir expressed deep grief and sorrow over the demise of noted journalist Abdul Rashid Shah, who passed away today after a brief illness.

In this regard, a condolence meeting was held at the Joint Directorate of Information Office which was attended by Joint Director Information Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari; Deputy Director Information, Mohammad Rafiq Zulla; Cultural Officer Kashmir and other officers and officials of the department.

In his condolence message, the Joint Director Information described the death of Abdul Rashid Shah as a significant loss to the media fraternity of Kashmir. He extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and patience for the family to bear this irreparable loss.

The employees of JDI Kashmir also expressed grief over the sad demise of the noted journalist. They recalled his long association with the Information Department and remembered him for his dedication and exemplary contribution to the field of journalism.

J&K Pradesh Congress Committee President, Tariq Hameed Karra has also condoled the demise and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

In a statement, Kara said: “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of distinguished journalist Abdul Rashid Shah, Chief Editor and owner of Urdu Daily Nida-e-Mashriq. A most venerated personality in Journalistic fraternity, he always used his pen in right direction and rendered his best services ‘fearlessly’ to the journalism and society as well. His passing away is indeed a great loss to the journalist fraternity of J&K. Late. Shah was a widely respected public figure.

“My deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Abdul Rashid Shah. I pray for his eternal peace and courage to bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss’.
