JAMMU: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services & Sports, and Transport, Satish Sharma, today laid the foundation stone for the Beautification and Infrastructure Development Project at Border Area Samwan, Thanger–Kachrial panchayat in Chhamb Constituency.

The project, being implemented by the Tourism Department at an estimated cost of ₹98.60 lakh, aims to transform the border area into a well-developed public and recreational space while improving the civic amenities for local residents and visitors.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister stated that the initiative reflects the government’s firm commitment towards inclusive and balanced development, with special focus on border and rural areas. He emphasized that development of such areas is not merely about physical infrastructure but also about restoring confidence, dignity and opportunities for local communities.

Satish Sharma highlighted that the beautification project has been carefully designed to ensure safety, accessibility and aesthetic enhancement of the area.

The scope of work includes chain-link fencing to ensure safety and proper demarcation, construction of a six-foot-wide pedestrian footpath using paver blocks and development of resting and recreational zones equipped with five gazebos and high-quality steel benches for public use.

The project also envisages extensive land development works, including earth filling, removal of wild growth, and proper terrain dressing to create a clean and welcoming environment. In addition, a toilet complex will be constructed to provide basic sanitation facilities and two main entrance gates will be installed to regulate access and improve the overall layout of the site.

The Minister said that such infrastructure will not only enhance the visual appeal of the border belt but will also promote local tourism, encourage community interaction and provide a dignified public space for residents, especially youth and families. He added that the Tourism Department is increasingly focusing on identifying and developing new destinations across Jammu & Kashmir to diversify tourism and spread economic benefits to grassroots levels.

Reiterating the government’s development agenda, Satish Sharma assured that all projects will be executed with strict adherence to quality standards and timelines. He called upon the executing agencies to ensure transparency, accountability, and community participation during implementation.

Senior officers of the Tourism Department, PW(R&B), district administration, elected representatives and local residents were present on the occasion.
