Art That Defies Gravity
FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

On social media, where countless artists share their work, one often comes across astonishing sculptures created simply by balancing stones one upon another. Some of these artworks appear almost impossible, leading many to assume that glue or hidden supports must be involved. Yet there are artists who truly defy gravity, achieving balance through skill, patience, and a deep understanding of natural forces. One such artist is Pontus Jansson.

Jansson is a Swedish land artist and master stone balancer, widely known for his intricate, gravity-defying sculptures created in natural settings, often on the island of Öland. Using nothing but pressure points, gravity, and carefully calculated counterweights, he balances stones of varying sizes without any adhesives. The result is a series of elegant cairns that seem to hover in defiance of physical laws, celebrating both precision and harmony.

His work is deeply rooted in Zen principles, emphasizing stillness, patience, and a quiet connection with nature. Each sculpture is a temporary installation, existing only for a moment within the landscape before returning to the earth. Through photography, Jansson documents these fleeting creations, transforming them into lasting images that are shared widely on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, and often sold as fine-art prints.

More than just visual marvels, Jansson’s sculptures reflect a meditative practice and a search for inner peace. By combining stone balancing with photography, he invites viewers into a world of balance, tranquillity, and respect for nature. In essence, Pontus Jansson transforms simple natural elements into profound, ephemeral works of art, sharing a powerful message of peace, calm and harmony with the world.
