A remarkable moment of pride and unity was witnessed at the two-day Pehari Conference held in Noorkha Uri, where the participants extended a standing ovation to MLA Uri Dr. Sajjad Shafi for his outstanding contribution to the Pehari cause

Prominent personalities present on the occasion included Registrar Raja Shujat Ali Khan, DDC Boniyar Mohammad Ismail Khan, Mohammad Saleem Khan, Mohammad Aslam Khan, Atta Ullah Banday, Muzaffar Payamee, Aziz Dachanawi, and Mohammed Syed Khan, Ex ZEO, among others.

During his address, Raja Shujat Ali Khan highlighted the journey and resilience of Pahari culture, recalling a time when the community lacked basic recognition. He stated that today, with a Cultural Ministry and Tribal Ministry in place, the struggle has borne fruit. He further added that the people of Jammu & Kashmir look towards Uri, as leadership from the region has raised the voice for the Pahari community in the Assembly — something he termed a matter of pride for Uri.

During the event, speakers acknowledged the continuous efforts of MLA Dr. Sajjad Shafi in raising the voice of the Pehari people at various forums and ensuring recognition of their unique identity. His dedicated role in pursuing the official recognition of the Pehari language and addressing long-pending developmental concerns of the Pehari belt was especially applauded.

The audience stood in unison to celebrate his commitment and sincerity, reflecting the deep respect the community holds for his leadership. The organisers expressed gratitude to the MLA for always being at the forefront in safeguarding the cultural heritage and rights of the Pehari-speaking population.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, MLA Dr Sajjad Shafi Uri stated that even today, some forces attempt to divide communities, but such efforts will not be allowed to succeed. “We are one, and we will remain one,” he said, assuring the gathering that he stands 24 hours available for the protection, promotion and upliftment of the Pahari language, culture and identity. He expressed confidence in further strengthening cultural platforms for the community.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Sajjad Shafi extended heartfelt thanks to the J&K Cultural Academy for organising a successful two-day event in Uri calling it a meaningful step towards preserving and promoting Pahari heritage.
