NCORD meet: DC Kupwara reviews measures for containing drug abuse

KUPWARA:  Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kupwara, Shrikant Suse, today chaired a meeting of the District Level Committee under Narco Coordination (NCORD) to review various measures put in place by different departments for curbing the drug abuse in the district.

SSP Kupwara, Syed Tahir Al Geelani; ADC Kupwara, Gulzar Ahmad Khan; ASP Handwara, ACR, SDM Lolab, AC Panchayats, CMO, MS District Hospital, were present in the meeting. Besides, Principals of GDCs and Tehsildars attended the meeting virtually.

The meeting held a threadbare discussion on the agenda points and the officers presented detailed reports on the work done as per their roles and responsibilities.

Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner impressed upon all the officers to make coordinated efforts and work aggressively for eradication of drug abuse and addiction in the district.  He directed the concerned officers to focus on rehabilitation of drug victims by providing them self-employment avenues under different schemes.

Reviewing the measures under Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (TOFEI), it was given out that awareness programmes are being conducted in schools and colleges against the drug consumption to keep the youth away from the drug addiction. Principals of GDCs were asked to ensure installation of CCTVs at main gate points and around boundary wall of the Colleges so as to keep surveillance over drug related activities.

The Tehsildars along with Police were directed to identify drug hotspots where CCTVs shall be installed to keep close vigil on the drug abuse.

Meanwhile, the CMO informed that 1409 substance abusers have been identified out of which 791 are under treatment at Drug De-Addiction Centre Kupwara, besides, 432 have been recovered so far.

SSP Kupwara also gave feedback about the enforcement measures made by the Police in the district to contain the drug abuse.

Later, the DC chaired a separate meeting of concerned officers to review the coordination at district level under NDPS Act. SSP Kupwara, ADC Kupwara, ASP Handwara, ACR and other concerned were present in the meeting.
