Srinagar: Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather adjourned the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly sine die on the end of the nine-day session on Friday.

Barring a couple of noisy incidents, the House proceedings remained largely smooth as it took up the listed business. The session also witnessed elections to four Rajya Sabha seats being held.

Besides passing five government bills, the Assembly also discussed two private members’ resolutions, of which one was passed.

A total of 41 private members’ bills were listed, but only eight were taken up. All these were either withdrawn following government assurances or defeated by voice vote at the introduction stage.

There was one incident of walkout, when opposition BJP members stomped out of the Assembly on Thursday after the Speaker rejected the adjournment motion moved by Udhampur MLA Pawan Gupta to discuss the condition of flood victims in the Union territory.

The Speaker on Friday thanked the members for their cooperation.

“I thank all members for cooperation in conducting the proceedings,” Rather said.

Giving details of the business transacted during the short session, he said that the MLAs had submitted 732 questions.

While 682 questions were admitted, three were deleted and no question was withdrawn. He said 29 questions were taken up for discussion, while members asked 73 supplementaries.

“The members raised 97 issues during zero hour, which is unprecedented. I congratulate the members for raising the issues of their constituencies,” he added.

Rather said five government bills were tabled, considered and passed.

He said while 13 fresh private members’ bills were received by the Assembly Secretariat during the current session, 33 such bills were pending from the previous session.

“As many as 41 bills were listed but only eight could be taken up. The remaining bills will pass on to the next session,” he said.

The House took up 10 calling attention motions while seven resolutions were discussed in the Assembly.
