Srinagar: The Food Safety Wing of the Drugs and Food Control Organization, J&K, has taken strict action against five meat sellers in Srinagar for violating hygiene and sanitation rules. Officials found the sellers keeping meat carcasses hanging outside their shops in Hazooribagh and Nowgam, despite several previous warnings.
The department has issued prohibition orders, stopping these sellers from slaughtering or selling meat until further notice.
A meeting was later held between the Kashmir Butchers Association, led by President Khazir Mohammad Regoo, and the Commissioner of Food and Drugs Administration, J&K, Ms. Smita Sethi. Officials explained the need to follow proper hygiene and sanitation standards as required under the Food Safety and Standards regulations.
The Butchers Association requested a 15-day grace period to improve their shops as per the rules. Authorities agreed to the request but warned that after the grace period, strict action, including suspension or cancellation of licenses would be taken against any shop found violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.(KNS)
