It was heartbreaking to know that the literary world of Kashmir lost a profound voice- a poet, a prolific writer, a journalist and above all a great soul- Zahid Mukhtar will continue to stay in our thoughts and prayers.
I was blessed to meet this humble soul at Dargah Hazratbal, Srinagar, during our service at the Scouting Camp. He came to us, shook hands warmly, and expressed deep appreciation for our humble efforts in serving people during the auscipious month of Rabbi-al-Awal. That moment still shines in my memory — a reflection of his grace and humility.
A few years ago, I would regularly watch the ‘Good Morning Kashmir’ program on DD Kashmir, where Zahid Sahab’s presence added immense value and inspiration to the contents of the programme. His eloquence and wisdom touched countless hearts — not only in the valley but across the globe as Kashmiris residing abroad for work or business would often tune in to DD Kashmir, drawn by his dignified voice and refined intellect.
The Kashmir Valley, fondly known as Peer Vaer — the Valley of Saints, Valley of Mystics, and Valley of Scholars — has always been a land blessed with spirituality, beauty, and wisdom. Its majestic mountains, rivers, and meadows have nurtured countless luminaries in every field — literature, education, health, sports, and culture. Among these shining figures stood Mr. Zahid Mukhtar, who dedicated his life to service, enlightenment, and inspiration.
His demise is an irreparable loss. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family! Truly, one who lives for society and contributes selflessly to the nation never dies — they live on in the hearts of people forever.
It is a fact that most of the great men came to limelight posthumously and I am sure when the contributions of Zahid Mukhtar will be evaluated, people will realize what the literary world has lost. While his indelible marks are immense in all fields that he undertook, his major contributions however remain in the realm of Kashmiri and Urdu language. He has several publications in his name and his works are incredibly profound in though, structure, theme, rhythm and outlook.
It is my humble request that Zahid Mukhtar Sahab’s literary works and contributions be preserved in our local libraries and archives so that future generations are benefitted from his vision, wisdom, and devotion to his motherland.
Zahid Shb passed away on Thursday, 09 Oct, 2025 at his residence located in Anantnag. May Allah (SWT) grant him the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous, and give strength and patience to his family to bear this great loss.
Ameen.
