Police attach properties above ₹16 crore in major action against drug peddlers
FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

Srinagar: The daily reportage about arrests of drug peddlers, seizure of properties and recovery of contraband substances is alarming and also indicative of the very fact that Jammu and Kashmir is replicating the 2016 Bollywood movie Udta Punjab, as the drug trade seems to be on the rise despite the Police and other law-enforcing agencies making all efforts to deal with the crisis.

The reports received on Wednesday suggested how widespread the menace is and raised alarms to awaken society as a whole to join this war, the war against drug trafficking and abuse.

In a major step toward dismantling drug networks, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have attached properties worth ₹75 lakh, ₹73 lakh and ₹18 lakh in different locations.

The Police attached a residential property and land worth approximately ₹75 lakh under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Kenihama, BK Pora, Nowgam.

According to officials, the attached property comprises a double-storey residential house and 2.5 marlas of shared land (out of a total of 15 marlas). As per revenue records, the property is registered in the name of Mohammad Jaffar Ganie, father of Parwaiz Ahmad Ganie alias Pawa, who is currently lodged in District Jail Kathua under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Parwaiz Ahmad Ganie has been named in FIR No. 128/2022 under Sections 8, 22, and 29 of the NDPS Act, registered at Police Station Nowgam. Investigation revealed that Parwaiz is an active shareholder in the said property, holding a room in the residential house and 2.5 marlas of land. Based on these findings, the property was formally attached under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act.

The attachment was executed in the presence of the Executive Magistrate First Class, BK Pora, and two independent witnesses, following due legal procedure. Approval for the action was granted by the competent authority (SAFEMA, New Delhi), and due notice was served as per law.

Police stated that the owner is now legally barred from selling, leasing, altering, or creating any third-party interest in the property.

Meanwhile, the Police have also attached properties belonging to three notorious drug peddlers in Awantipora under the NDPS Act, 1985.

According to police, two single-storey residential houses valued at approximately ₹18 lakh were attached in Pampore. The properties belong to Muzaffar Ahmad Shalla, son of Gull Mohammad Shalla, a resident of Karewa Jablipora, Bijbehara, and Javid Ahmad Ganie, son-in-law of Late Ali Mohammad Rather, a resident of Gund Baba Khalil, Naina Sangam.

An inquiry conducted by the SHO Pampore, under the supervision of SDPO Pampore, revealed that both properties had been acquired through proceeds of illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Police said both individuals are involved in multiple FIRs and are presently under judicial custody at District Sub-Jail Pulwama.

In a separate action, police also attached a double-storey residential house valued at approximately ₹73 lakh, belonging to a notorious lady drug peddler, Fareeda Akhter, daughter of Gh. Rasool Shah, a resident of Larkipora. The property was identified as illegally acquired during an inquiry conducted by the SHO Awantipora, under the supervision of SDPO Awantipora. Police investigations confirmed that the asset was accumulated through proceeds from narcotic trafficking. Fareeda Akhter is also involved in several FIRs.

The attachments were made under Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

A police spokesperson said that such actions are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the drug network in the region. “J&K Police remains committed to eradicating the drug menace from society and will continue to take strict action against those involved in its trade,” the spokesperson added.

A team from Police Post Wachi, accompanied by an Executive Magistrate, conducted the raid leading to the recovery. Meanwhile, a notorious drug peddler was arrested allegedly with 21 grams of heroin and Rs 30,800 in cash near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Wednesday, police said.

The accused, identified as Pawan Singh alias Pammi, a resident of the Serbad village, was arrested allegedly along with the contraband and cash near Tarakote area, a police spokesman said.

He said Singh is a notorious drug peddler who was earlier detained for several months under the PIT-NDPS (Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act.

He is named in four FIRs related to the NDPS Act and two daily diary entries since 2021, the police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Reasi, Paramvir Singh said, “We are adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards drug peddlers and habitual offenders. The cooperation of the public is equally important.” He urged citizens to share any information related to drug smuggling or distribution so that strict action can be taken against the culprits.
