First from J&K: Mithun Manhas takes charge as BCCI President

Srinagar: Celebrations are sweeping across Bhalessa, Doda, and the wider Jammu & Kashmir region after local boy Mithun Manhas assumed office as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), becoming the first person from the Union Territory to occupy the country’s top cricketing post.

Residents of his native hamlet in Doda and neighbouring villages are expressing pride and hope. “Mithun’s journey shows that even from the remotest corners, you can reach the top,” said a local elder from Doda. “This is a historic moment for all of us. Our youth now have someone they can look up to.” Another resident added, “From our small school in Bhalessa to the BCCI presidency, this is the kind of success that inspires generations.”

Manhas began his schooling in a small primary and middle school in Doda before moving to Jammu. He played 157 first-class matches, scoring 27 centuries, and captained Delhi alongside stars like VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly. In the IPL, he represented Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings, and Pune Warriors India, gaining exposure to top-level cricket administration.

Beyond his playing career, Manhas has served in administrative roles with the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), mentoring young cricketers, scouting talent from remote districts, and contributing to structured coaching programs. “With someone from our own soil at the helm, young players now see real opportunity,” said a senior JKCA cricketer to KNS.

The appointment has ignited optimism across the Valley and Jammu regions. Coaches, players, and aspiring cricketers see it as a chance for better infrastructure, exposure, and representation. “This is more than just an honor; it is a door opening for young cricketers here,” said a former district-level player from Doda.
