Kishtwar: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma today visited the remote village of Margi in the Warwan area of District Kishtwar, which has recently suffered severe devastation due to incessant rains and flash floods.
Haji Tariq Keen, Ravi Parihar (District President), Prashant Bhandari (General Secretary), Mansoor Mattoo (President, Minority Morcha), Samir Ganaie, and Santosh Bhandari also accompanied Sunil Sharma during the visit.
The natural calamity has caused widespread damage, washing away several houses and extensively affecting road connectivity, cutting off the entire population from the rest of the district. Many families have been left homeless, and the region is currently grappling with acute shortages of shelter, food, drinking water, medicines, and basic amenities.
Officials from the local administration and BJP activists accompanied Sunil Sharma. Despite the difficult terrain and disrupted routes, he reached Margi to meet with affected families and assess the extent of destruction firsthand. He interacted with the residents, listened to their grievances, and assessed the current situation.
Sunil Sharma described the scale of destruction as heartbreaking. “Many families have lost everything. The roads are gone, supplies are cut off, and people are without food, shelter, or medical care,” he said. He assured the villagers that he would raise the matter at the highest levels and urge the administration for immediate relief and rehabilitation measures. “Relief must reach people now. Temporary shelters, emergency food supplies, medicines, and restoration of road links must be treated as top priorities,” he added.
He called upon the Union Territory administration and disaster management authorities to deploy emergency teams, including medical staff and engineers, to the area urgently. He also appealed to NGOs and civil society to support the people of Warwan during this critical time. He assured the residents of Margi and adjoining areas that they would not be left alone in this hour of crisis and that he would continue to monitor the relief efforts closely.
Sunil Sharma emphasized the need for a long-term plan to strengthen infrastructure in remote regions like Warwan, which remain especially vulnerable during extreme weather events. “Our remote areas need better preparedness, not just sympathy after disaster strikes,” he said.
