Srinagar: Bakerwals who have shifted their sheep and goats to higher reaches of Wadwan area of district Kishtwar for grazing purpose, a routine summer practice, have suffered huge losses due to the inclement weather conditions.

Reports suggest that due to unexpected snowfall, the live stock has perished and most of the live stock owners have rushed to nearby villages to save their lives from the cold wave.

The areas which, as per reports, have been worst hit include Margan Top, Matti Gavran, Jabal Nala, Mijli Nalla, Marwa, and Sukhnai grazing areas.

In Zajimarg, one Bakerwal, identified as Bashir Ahmad Pujwala suffered heavy losses as his live stock was hit by avalanche.

Reports suggest that at least three to four hundred families have been impacted by the bad weather conditions, however, no one from the state administration has bothered to check upon these people.

Basharat Ali, a resident of Mansar, who also shifts his live stock to the grazing areas of Daksum in Kashmir during summers phoned Kashmir Images office saying his ‘biradari has faced huge losses in Wadwan area.’

“My live stock is safe but those who have shifted to Wadwan area have suffered huge. Authorities knew that these areas have witnessed unexpected snowfall and thus they should have rushed rescue teams there. But no, nothing of the sort has happened till date and they are not even bothered to enquire about the losses,” Ali told Kashmir Images.

The effected people, who manage to reach the areas where they could get connected to people through mobile phones, have been appealing to the government to send special teams to these areas and see for themselves how much they have suffered.

One of the victims who manages to call our source Basharat Ali said that there are huge losses and government need to act swiftly.
