Dr. Aaliya Mushtaq Baba is a distinguished academic and poet Born and Raised in Srinagar. She currently teaches English at the University of Kashmir and has served in the academic departments of three universities over the past six years. With a PhD in English literature focused on the politics and philosophy of autobiography, her work brings together intellect and intuition.

Her poetry has been published in respected journals such as Miraas, Sheeraza, Kashmir Lit, English Studies in India, and Setu (Pittsburgh, USA). Her voice also appears in anthologies including ‘The Kali Project’ and ‘Love and Longing’. Dr.Aliya Mushtaq Baba’s creative and scholarly work consistently explores themes of identity, language, and the self.

Summary of the Book

An Ode to Silence is a deeply intimate exploration of resilience, memory, womanhood, and survival. The poems traverse a range of emotional and experiential terrains, all the while rooted in the quietude that the title evokes. Baba’s writing reflects the lived experiences of women and the psychological undercurrents of contemporary life. Her verse is tender yet unflinching—capturing the silent moments of suffering, survival, and self-realization.

What sets the book apart is its use of simplicity as a tool for depth. Baba’s language is not adorned with overly complex metaphor or elaborate diction; instead, she uses everyday words to excavate extraordinary emotional truths. The effect is haunting—the reader is drawn into rooms of memory, into images like a coffee table heavy with cold words, or a neck burdened with invisible graves. Each poem feels like stepping into a moment suspended in time, offering space for contemplation and reflection.

Critical Analysis

The strength of An Ode to Silence lies in its balance—between light and shadow, fragility and power, stillness and movement. Baba’s poetic style is Introspective, making the reader an active participant in meaning-making. These are not poems that impose interpretation; they gently suggest, evoke, and allow the reader to find resonance.

Her exploration of female experience is especially poignant. Rather than portraying victimhood or invoking pity, Baba presents women’s lives with nuance, honoring their endurance in the face of disillusionment, emotional complexity, and social expectation. There is a quiet defiance in her lines, a belief that strength often hides in silence, and that truth can exist without spectacle.

Design-wise, the book is visually appealing and well-organized. However, at ₹295 for 80 pages, the pricing may feel a touch steep for the average poetry reader. Nonetheless, what the book lacks in length, it more than makes up for in literary weight and emotional depth.

Final Verdict

Dr. Aaliya Mushtaq Baba’s “An Ode to Silence”is more than a collection of poems—it is a reflective space, a companion for anyone navigating the tender and turbulent terrain of being. These poems do not merely speak; they witness, they remember, and they invite. They hold silence like a sacred thread, reminding us that even in our quietest moments, we are not alone.

Whether you’re a seasoned lover of poetry or a new reader drawn to emotion-rich verse, this book offers something rare: a stillness that listens back.
