Kargil: The first Snow Skiing Course of the 2024-25 season, organized by the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) Gulmarg, concluded successfully today at Umba, Sankoo, Kargil, marking a significant step in promoting winter sports in Ladakh.
The 14-day training program, which is part of IISM’s annual winter sports initiative, witnessed enthusiastic participation from 40 students across India, including several from Kargil. Under the guidance of highly trained instructors, the trainees underwent rigorous training, mastering various skiing techniques such as kick turn, snow plough, snow plough turn, traverse/uphill swing, long parallel turn, short parallel turn, downhill swing, and basic swing.
The closing ceremony was graced by Col I. S. Thapa, SM, VSM, MID, Principal of IISM, as the chief guest. He distributed awards to top performers and presented certificates to all successful participants, applauding their dedication and progress. He also acknowledged the efforts of instructors and administrative staff in ensuring the course’s success.
IISM conducts two snow skiing courses every winter in Kargil as part of its mission to develop skiing talent in the region and nurture athletes for national and international competitions. The success of this program paves the way for future training initiatives, further strengthening Kargil’s position as an emerging hub for winter sports in Ladakh.
