Srinagar: Member Legislative Assembly (MLA) Zadibal and National Conference chief spokesperson Tanveer Sadiq claimed on Saturday that water meters will not be installed anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir, and that no water usage charges will be collected from people as “promised by the government”.

The NC leader’s assertions came a day after the Jal Shakti Department had announced that water meters will be installed on commercial establishments first, and that the decision on domestic users will be taken afterwards.

“No water meters will be installed anywhere in J&K, and the government has made it quite clear that residents will not be charged for using water. As far as domestic consumers are concerned, the government will determine what should and shouldn’t be done,” Sadiq told the media, in response to the Jal Shakti Department’s announcement of installing water meters in J&K.

Considering the difficulties the people of Jammu and Kashmir faced for over a decade in absence of a popular government, the administration is determined to offer them as much relief as possible, he added.

Hailing the Finance minister’s announcement during the Union Budget 2025 that individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakh annually would not have to pay income tax, Sadiq said the overall budget presented by the FM is balanced, and hoped that J&K as a major tourism hub, will be included in the list of 50 new tourist destinations of India.

The NC leader also anticipated that a sizable financial allocation would be made for J&K in order to usher in a new era of business and job growth in the region.
