Chilla-i-Kalan set to end on dry note

Srinagar: Chilla-i-Kalan— the 40-day period of harsh winter— in Kashmir is all set to culminate on the dry note as there is no forecast of any major weather activity till January end while the Jammu and Kashmir during the first three weeks of 2025 has recorded a deficit rainfall of 81 per cent.

According to Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Director Meteorological department (MeT) has predicted some possibility of light rain and snow at isolated places on January 23 and in between January 29 and 30.

As per the details available with KNO, J&K has recorded a deficit rainfall of 81 per cent till today (January 22) as against the normal precipitation of 60.5 mm, the Union Territory has recorded just 11.4mm rainfall with highest deficiency in Kathua at 98 percent from January 01 to 22nd.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a deficit rainfall of 71 per cent while Shopian has recorded the second highest deficiency with 94 percent.

Reasi, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Jammu and Doda have recorded a deficient rainfall of 90 per cent or above during the period while Udhampur, Samba and Ramban have recorded a deficit precipitation of above 80 per cent in 22 days.

Anantnag and Pulwama districts in South Kashmir have seen a deficiency of 77 per cent and 75 per cent respectively, the data revealed and added that Budgam, Bandipora and Rajouri have recorded a deficient rainfall of 69 per cent, 63 per cent and 64 per cent respectively.
