Three-day orientation programme for MLAs to commence today at Jammu

Jammu: The three-day orientation programme for MLAs of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly will commence on the 9th of January, 2025 at the Central Hall of J&K Legislative Assembly Complex, Jammu, an official press release informed Wednesday.

It said the programme is being organised by J&K Legislative Assembly Secretariat in collaboration with PRIDE, Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The inaugural function of the programme will be graced by distinguished dignitaries like the Chief Minister, Speaker, J&K Legislative Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister as well as other senior officers.

The first Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir was constituted on 8th October 2024. The ninety (90) Member House presently has eighty-eight (88) members, of which, fifty (50) members have been elected for the first time.

In order to help the newly elected members to effectively discharge their onerous responsibilities of meeting the aspirations of people, this three-day orientation programme is being held on Parliamentary Practices, Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.

The programme will feature discussions by eminent Parliamentarians like Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, Chairperson, Committee on Estimates; N.K Premachandran and Dr. Satayapal Singh, former Members Lok Sabha. The subjects to be discussed and deliberated during the programme included Legislative Processes, Budgetary Process, Executive Accountability through Questions, Committee System and Information Support to Legislators, Do’s and Don’ts for an Effective Legislator and a session on NEVA. The insights gained through these lectures will provide the newly elected members with a deep understanding of workings of the legislature and the responsibility they carry as elected representatives. The lectures will also be co-hosted by Senior Officers of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

This programme is expected to enhance the capacity of MLAs to significantly contribute to policy formulation and ensure its effective implementation for the greater good of the Union Territory.
