Srinagar: The Department of Wildlife Protection (DoWP) has announced the arrival of migratory birds into the wetlands of Kashmir, marking the beginning of their winter sojourn.

These avian visitors, travelling from various parts of the world, will inhabit and traverse the region’s wetlands over the coming months.

To ensure their safety, the department has outlined strict measures to protect the birds and their habitats. Public cooperation is being sought to prevent any harm to these migratory species.

“The Department of Wildlife Protection informs the general public that migratory birds from various parts of the world have begun arriving at the wetlands of Kashmir. These birds will inhabit and move between the wetlands during the winter months,” department said in a public notice.

“To ensure their safety and protection, the Department of Wildlife Protection is entrusted with safeguarding these migratory birds,” it said, adding that, unfortunately, some individuals with ill intentions attempt to harm the birds or disrupt their habitats.

To prevent such activities, the public notice said that no one shall be allowed to venture into the wetlands without prior permission and that the individuals interested in bird watching must obtain proper authorization.

“This measure helps the department identify legitimate visitors; anyone found entering the wetlands without permission will be considered in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and strict action will be taken against them under the provisions of the Act,” it added.

The cooperation of the public is essential in providing a safe environment for these migratory birds during their stay in Kashmir, the notice reads. (KNO)
