‘Samvidhan Divas-2024’: KU reiterates constitutional literacy; promotes democracy’s core values

Srinagar: To enhance constitutional literacy and promote the core values of democracy, justice and equality enshrined in the Constitution of India, the University of Kashmir (KU), Tuesday celebrated the ‘Samvidhan Divas’ or the ‘Constitution Day’ here.

Organised by the varsity’s School of Law, the event commemorated the adoption of the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949.

Highlighting the significance of the day, KU Vice Chancellor, Prof Nilofer Khan, emphasised the need to understand the Constitution in its letter and spirit.

“Every principle laid down in the Preamble is enshrined with wisdom and vision that guides our nation,” she said, reiterating the day’s significance for the nation.

KU’s Dean, Academic Affairs, Prof Shariefuddin Pirzada, stressed on the need for awareness about the Constitution and its laws.

“As responsible citizens, we must learn about the Constitution and respect the laws laid down for us,” he said, emphasising the power of the document that “unites our country”.

Dean, College Development Council (DCDC), KU, Prof Khurshid Ahmad Butt, underscored the important role the Constitution plays in India’s growth and in reaching key milestones.

“Today, we celebrate the adoption of a living document that has shaped our nation,” Prof Butt said, reaffirming the collective commitment to equality, justice and integrity as outlined in it.

KU Registrar, Prof Naseer Iqbal, spoke on the guarantees of dignity and equality for all citizens as enshrined in the Constitution.

“The principles of our Constitution govern our lives. We must respect and uphold this precious document,” he urged.

Earlier, Incharge Head, School of Law, KU, Dr Shahnaz, acknowledged the contributions of freedom fighters and leaders in framing the Constitution.

“Today, we honour the efforts of those who shaped this important document which continues to guide our democratic journey,” she said.

The Preamble of the Constitution was read on the occasion wherein the participants pledged to uphold its principles in their personal and professional lives.

Faculty, School of Law, KU, Dr Yasir Lateef Handoo, conducted the proceedings, while senior faculty at the School, Dr Syed Asima Refayi, proposed the formal vote of thanks.

Controller of Examinations, KU, Dr Majid Zaman Baba; Dean, Students’ Welfare, KU, Prof Shamim Ahmad Shah; Media Advisor, KU, Dr Musavir Ahmed, besides officers from KU administration, faculty members, scholars and students from the School of Law, attended the function.
