New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday urged members to follow the tradition of constructive and dignified debates set by the Constituent Assembly while deliberating upon the Constitution that was adopted 75 years ago.

Addressing an event to kick-start year-long celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, Birla said the Constituent Assembly had worked hard for nearly three years to weave together the geographic and social diversity of the country in the Constitution.

“These traditions of constructive and dignified debates should be implemented by our respective Houses as well,” he said.

Birla said the Constituent Assembly has seen members sharing views with dignity and tradition of such discourse should continue.

He highlighted the historic significance of the day, recalling the adoption of the Constitution 75 years ago.

“On this day, in this sacred chamber, our Constitution was adopted, a document that stands as a testament to the dedication, sacrifice, and vision of our forebears. Under the leadership of the President, millions of Indians today will recite the Preamble and pledge to uphold the ideals enshrined in our Constitution,” he said.

The Speaker noted that Parliament has played a transformative role over the past seven and a half decades.

“Our Constitution has been a catalyst for social and economic change, bringing remarkable improvements to the lives of ordinary citizens and deepening their faith in democracy. In this ‘Amrit Kaal,’ collective efforts are propelling India toward becoming a developed nation,” he added.

Birla also underscored the Constitution’s role in balancing the powers of the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary, stating, “Over 75 years, these three pillars of democracy have worked in harmony, contributing significantly to India’s holistic development.”

Quoting Dr B R Ambedkar, Birla reminded people of the Constitution’s dual mission: “Our Constitution should not only protect liberty and equality but also help unite the people of this country.”

He urged members of Parliament to carry forward this vision by fostering inclusivity and dialogue in legislative proceedings.

“Our unwavering commitment to constitutional values has enhanced India’s standing on the global stage, exemplifying the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family,” Birla said, adding this spirit has guided India’s contributions to global peace and development.

He encouraged MPs to celebrate the milestone by engaging their constituencies.

“Let us mark this 75th anniversary as a festival in our constituencies, involving citizens to strengthen the spirit of ‘Nation First,’” Birla urged.
