Srinagar: In a major decision, the newly formed Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday reverted the academic calendar from the March session to November.
This is the first major decision of the LG administration that has been reversed by the Abdullah-led government.
The decision – that the academic session would conclude with annual exams by November — was announced by Abdullah in the presence of School Education Minister Sakina Masood Itoo here.
“There was a demand from parents and students for reverting the academic calendar to the November session instead of the March session in Kashmir and the winter zone of the Jammu division. I am thankful to School Education Minister Sakina Itoo for bringing this proposal to the cabinet which has approved it,” Abdullah said in a video message.
Abdullah said while classes 1 to 9 will revert to the November examination schedule from this year, classes 10 to 12 will do it from next year.
“Till class 9th the exam schedule will be reverted back to the erstwhile scheme from this year. The winter zone exams will now be held before winter vacations,” Omar Abdullah said.
The chief minister said that due to board exam issues, the exam schedule of 10th, 11th and 12th classes have not been changed from this year. “But I assure students that their schedule of exams will also be changed from next year,” he said.
The chief minister hoped that the decision will have a positive impact on the ground and provide a sigh of relief to students and their parents.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo also said that the academic session has been restored to November-December up to 9th standard from this year.
“For now, we will restore the academic session back to November-December up to 9th standard. For students of 10th to 12th, academic sessions will be restored from next year,” she said.
The LG administration had implemented the March examination schedule in the valley and winter zone areas of Jammu in 2022 to bring the academic calendar in sync with the rest of the country.
However, due to persistent demand from a section of parents and students, the Abdullah government has announced that the annual examination will now be held again in November every year.
