The valedictory function, held both on-campus and outdoors, highlighted the importance of involving students as key stakeholders in the conservation process. Principal of the College, Prof. (Dr.) Tehmina Yousuf, lauded the collaborative efforts of the Department of Zoology, the facilitators, and the students. She assured that the momentum built during the workshop would continue, and the college would remain committed to promoting sustainability and environmental awareness.

Mr. Rafi Ahmad Baht, Regional Director of the Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing (DEERS), stressed the crucial role of youth in environmental conservation, noting that such workshops are essential in fostering a deeper understanding of wetland ecosystems. He called the students “ambassadors of our society,” underscoring their role in driving the conservation movement forward.

The workshop featured twenty-two students from various streams of the college, who actively participated in a series of technical sessions. The main focus was to cultivate a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship among the youth. As part of the closing event, the participants showcased a photo-essay exhibition in the Zoology Lawns, creatively depicting the conservation challenges facing Khushalsar and Gilsar Lakes. The exhibition aimed to engage the broader public and raise awareness about the urgent need to protect these water bodies.

Key technical sessions were led by prominent experts, including Mr. Kh Samuel Poumai, Senior Manager Services – Project Delivery & PMU at STS Global, who served as the master trainer. Mr. Poumai provided valuable insights into sustainable practices for wetland conservation. Joining him was Mr. Jalal Ud Din Baba, a Science Filmmaker and Earth Journalist, who guided participants through the intersection of media and environmental advocacy, highlighting the power of storytelling in conservation.

The valedictory function was graced by esteemed environmentalists, including Advocate Nadeem Qadri, Ms. Nazir Benazir (Senior Environmentalist), and Mr. Mansoor Wangnoo, all of whom praised the students’ dedication and active involvement in the conservation of Khushalsar and Gilsar Lakes. Their words of encouragement emphasized the need for collective efforts to preserve Kashmir’s vital natural resources.

Certificates were awarded to all participants in recognition of their commitment to the cause. The workshop has successfully fostered a platform for students to engage in wetland conservation efforts while instilling the values needed to become environmental stewards.
