Islamia College Women’s Cell hosts seminar on safeguarding children’s rights

Srinagar: College Women Cell of Islamia College hosted a significant seminar focused on the “Protection of Rights of Children” in the Campus on a theme, discussions on safeguarding the fundamental rights of children in today’s world.

The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Irfan Shafi, Convenor, College Women’s Cell from PG department of English, ICSC who in her introductory speech said that, “Every child deserves not just survival but the opportunity to thrive. Professor Irfana also highlighted about the series of events and activities conducted by the College Women’s Cell within and outside the campus.

Principal of the College, Professor Tehmina Yousuf who emphasized the critical need for increased awareness and action regarding children’s rights said that, “The protection of children’s rights is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative for all of us. Professor Tehmina stated in her opening address that this initiative, supported by Islamia College, seeks to engage students and local stakeholders in advocacy and educational activities.

Keynote speakers of the seminar Professor Zahida Mehraj, Associate Professor from the PG Department of Zoology, ICSC delivered a powerful keynote address on the global and national landscape of child rights. Professor Zahida Mehraj discussed and highlighted the persistent challenges, including child labor, trafficking, and inadequate access to education. 

The event featured a series of expert presentations and interactive sessions, highlighting various aspects of child rights protection. Distinguished guests Dr. Khair-ul-Nisa, Ms. Nuzhat Un Nisa Koul, Ms. Misba Rasheed, Dr. Shaid Ronga, Ms. Benish Kazimi from the Child Welfare Committee, Govt. of J&K, District Srinagar were present in the seminar who shared their viewpoint on the topic.

Dr. Khairul Nissa, presented her insights on the psychological and physical impacts of rights violations on children. She discussed how exposure to abuse, neglect, and exploitation can lead to long-lasting trauma and developmental issues. Dr. Khair-Ul-Nissa urged for a holistic approach to child protection that integrates psychological support with legal and educational interventions. 

Professor Ab. Majid, Head, PG Department of English, ICSC highlighted the role of educational institutions and community organizations in advocating for legal protections and ensuring that children’s rights are enforced.

The seminar also included dynamic panel discussions and interactive Q&A sessions which was moderated by Ms. Nuzhat Ul Nisa Koul, Ms. Misbah Rasheed, Dr. Shaid A Ronga, Ms. Benish Kazimi providing attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the experts. 

In closing ceremony, Professor Rehana Bhat from PG Department of English reiterated the college’s commitment to this cause. She concluded with a formal vote of thanks.
