Srinagar: Last month in Srinagar, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, officially launched “Umeed Abhi Baqi Hai,” a compelling collection of dramas and features by esteemed writer and former broadcaster Bashir Ahmad Buch.
The book is a profound exploration of social issues, aiming to inspire hope and prompt timely actions that can foster positive change in the lives of those affected by female feticide, extremism, and other social evils.
The collection champions the Gandhian principle of non-violence as a means to address grievances and emphasizes the importance of a compassionate approach to rehabilitate the victims of terrorism. Buch’s work calls for the adoption of alternative energy sources and environment-friendly technologies to combat climate change, advocating for a lifestyle that preserves nature.
One of the standout pieces in the collection, “Aurat-Baqa-e Qainaat” (Women, The Essence of the Universe), addresses the grave issues of female feticide and the denial of education to girls, which hinders their all-round growth. This feature is a heartfelt tribute to the girl child and aligns with the Government of India’s “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” campaign.
In “Dard Ka Ehsaas” (Feel of the Pain), Buch skillfully navigates the themes of extremism and violence, urging for the careful handling of disillusioned youth. Through Gandhian principles of non-violence and truth, he explores the potential for rehabilitative measures to change the mindset of those who have fallen prey to anti-social elements.
“Lafzon ka Safar” (Words Work Wonders) sheds light on how backward mindsets can obstruct justice for women, perpetuating gender inequality and hindering societal progress. This feature underscores that the advancement of society is inextricably linked to the status and treatment of women.
In “Fitrat Se Qurbat” (Close to Nature), Buch advocates for a return to simple living and the adoption of environment-friendly practices. He emphasizes that raising awareness about the environment is the best way to preserve it for future generations.
The dramatic presentation “Aao Ahed Karein” (Let Us Pledge) depicts the transformation of rural life through schemes like MGNREGA, highlighting the principles of rural development and nationalism.
“Sher Dil-Insaan” (Human with Lion’s Heart) focuses on the importance of adopting children orphaned by communal riots and terrorism, emphasizing education and proper guidance as tools to change a mindset of vengeance. The drama features Sher Khan, a retired army officer, who becomes a social worker following the death of his son in a bomb blast, illustrating the destructive impact of communalism and the need for communal harmony.
“Piyas Aur Panah” (Thirst and Shelter) addresses environmental issues in a conversational and approachable manner, urging families to pass down the importance of environmental conservation to the younger generation.
“Umeed Abhi Baqi Hai” is more than just a literary collection; it is a call to action. Through its dramatized scripts, the book highlights crucial issues such as nationalism, brotherhood, communal harmony, environmentalism, and gender sensitivity. Bashir Ahmad Buch’s work serves as a significant contribution to social discourse, aiming to motivate and inspire mass change for a better future.
