Kulgam: In a remarkable achievement, the Zoology Department of Government Degree College (GDC) Kulgam, located in the Jammu and Kashmir region, has successfully incorporated sericulture as a skill-based program for its students, culminating in the reaping of the first crop of cocoons.

Sericulture, the art of cultivating silkworms for the production of silk, has long been recognized as a valuable economic activity, particularly in regions with suitable climatic conditions. The implementation of the sericulture program at GDC Kulgam was a collaborative effort between the college administration, the Zoology Department, and the district Sericulture dept. The department established a dedicated sericulture unit within the college premises, where students could learn the intricacies of silkworm rearing, cocoon production, and the various stages of the silk-making process.

Under the guidance of experienced faculty members, the students engaged in various aspects of sericulture, including mulberry plantation, silkworm egg incubation, larval feeding, and cocoon harvesting. The department’s commitment to providing a comprehensive learning experience ensured that the students gained a deep understanding of the science and the practical applications of sericulture.

The hard work and dedication of the students, coupled with the expert instruction and support from the Zoology Department, have now borne fruit. The college proudly announced the reaping of the first crop of cocoons, a significant milestone in the development of the sericulture program.

This success story holds immense potential for the future. Not only does it provide students with a valuable skill set, but it also opens up new avenues for income generation and economic development in the region. The cultivation of silk can be a lucrative enterprise, with the potential to create employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy.

The Zoology Department’s initiative at GDC Kulgam serves as a model for other educational institutions to follow. By integrating practical, skill-based programs into their curriculum, colleges can empower students, foster innovation, and contribute to the overall growth and development of their respective communities.

This success story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the commitment of the Zoology Department at GDC Kulgam to providing its students with the tools and knowledge to thrive in the ever-evolving job market. As the sericulture program continues to grow, the college’s reputation as a hub of academic excellence and practical innovation is sure to be further strengthened.
