AJKPC asks PM to avenge Aijaz’s killing

Jammu: While paying homage and expressing grief over the demise of Aijaz Sheikh, a former Sarpanch in Shopian district of Kashmir who was brutally killed by terrorists on Saturday, the All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) condemned the incident and has demanded an NIA probe and suitable compensation for the family of the deceased.

While interacting with media persons after the condolence meeting, Anil Sharma, President of AJKPC, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take cognizance of the assassination of the former Sarpanch and ensure that the culprits of this gruesome crime do not go scot-free and are neutralized at the earliest.

The AJKPC president said that grassroots-level democracy workers left no stone unturned to ensure maximum participation of voters in the ongoing election process. He alleged that like successive governments at the centre and local level in J & K, the incumbent rulers have also ignored and left the PRI members at the mercy of the terrorists.

He also accused the police authorities of failing to provide adequate security to the PRI members. He informed that over two dozen PRI members have sacrificed their lives for the sake of democracy and have become victims of the bullets of anti-national forces. Sharma claimed that files for providing security to the PRI members remained unattended at the Security Headquarters for years, whereas the leaders of the influential political parties are provided X, Y, and Y-plus category security along with VIP protocols within hours and days.

Sharma also asked the Director General of Police, J & K, and the Chief of Jammu and Kashmir Security Headquarters to not discriminate against people based on their social, political, or economic status but to consider requests for security based on threat perception. Without naming any political party, Sharma also alleged that selected leaders of political parties stay in Kashmir for a week or fortnight under full protocol and security apparatus and claim to be mass leaders of Kashmir, whereas the truth is that only Panches and Sarpanches have preserved and kept intact the faith of the people in democracy. He demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the family of the former Sarpanch Aijaz Sheikh and a government job for a suitable family member.
