Talking to reporters after inaugurating the police post at Rohmoo in southern district of Pulwama, the DGP as per news agency KNO said that police force is fully prepared and geared up for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in J&K.

“We will ensure peaceful Lok Sabha polls in J&K. We will provide a safe and secure atmosphere to enthusiastic voters,” the DGP said, in reply to a query.

Replying to another query about “narco-terror”, the DGP said that earlier, they had a doubt whether these two – narcotics trade and terrorism — are really linked. “As the investigations progressed, concrete evidence came to fore that narco-trade and terrorism are deeply not only linked but interconnected. Terrorist outfits like Al-Badr, Jaish-e-Muhammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba are behind this trade,” he said.

The police chief said that a consignment of narcotics valued at Rs 15 lakh reaches upto Rs one crore after travelling from Kashmir to Delhi and other parts of the country.

“We have a robust mechanism to curb and crack this trade. It is not so easy but we are doing it and the police force is capable of doing it,” he said.

The DGP also said that police will take toughest action against drug peddlers and seek capital punishment for repeat offenders in cases lodged under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

He said the police and other law-enforcement agencies have categorized the elements involved in substance trade, and soon toughest action will be initiated against kingpins of drug peddling.

“There are two groups – one who is involved in its consumption and peddling, while the other one is the supplier who is making assets out of its income. The process of identifying such elements is underway in all districts of Jammu and Kashmir, and tough action will be initiated soon,” the DGP said.

He added the police are working on a strategy that elements involved in drug peddling twice or thrice should face stern action.

“We want two to three drug peddlers should be given death sentence by competent courts. This will radiate a strong message that such anti-social activities are absolutely intolerable for the government. Police will seek capital punishment for repeat offenders in cases lodged under NDPS Act,” DGP held.
