Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President and Member of the Parliament from Srinagar Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Friday said that women’s participation in politics is the stepping stone towards fostering gender equality.

This he, according to the NC spokesperson, said while addressing a public gathering while celebrating International Women’s Day at Kothe Saled Bishnah.

The public meeting was organised and chaired by Bimla Luthra vice president of JKNC (women’s wing).

Among others, Ajay Sadhotra, Rattan Lal Gupta, Pooja Thakur DDC Chairperson Kishtwar, Shamim Begum DDC Nagrota, Pink Khalsa, Vijay Lochan, Bharti, Raj Joginder, Sham Lal, Deepinder Kour, Vijay Laxmi Datta were also present on the occasion.

Dr Farooq said, “The perception that women are inferior and not equal to men is misplaced. Our mothers and sisters on the contrary have played outstanding roles in all walks of life, including education, business, economics, politics and governance.”

He further added, “Women of Jammu and Kashmir have come a long way but a lot needs to be accomplished and soon. NC introduced massive reforms for women’s empowerment. Our commitment to the women empowerment agenda is absolute and we will continue to uphold it. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring women a secure and enabling environment to ensure they play their rightful role in J&K’s development.”

A similar function was addressed by State Women’s Wing President Shameema Firdous at Youngora, Ganderbal.

Among others Provincial President Er. Sabiya Qadri, In Charge Constituency Ganderbal Sheikh Gayusdin, District Secretary Women’s Wing Ayesha ji were also present on the occasion.

Emphasising on the equal opportunities for social and economic emancipation of women, Shameema said, “We in NC have been successful in our outreach programme to women across J&K for building a deeper connect and tapping their strength to attune our party policies according to their needs and requirements. NC Women’s Wing is all set to play a visible role in the upcoming elections side by side with men in trouncing such elements who want to destroy our unique character and historic individuality.”
